Shake well before use: A rare boxing scene or call it “Osoro’s 4steps to losing a fight at a funeral”

The first day of February 2021 was the saddest day for some Kenyans, but indeed, the most interesting one for others. The former Prime Minister, Hon. Raila Odinga, and the DP William Ruto found themselves sharing the same podium at a Kisii funeral. The occasion, which had attracted leaders from the Tangatanga team and renown ODM diehards, had to halt for a couple of minutes as peacemakers struggled to stop the South Mugirango MP, Sylvanus Osoro, and his colleague, the Dagoretti North MP, Simba Arati, from publicly exchanging blows. The burial ceremony of Mzee Abel Gongera, the father to Kisii Deputy Governor, Joash Maangi, nearly turned into a battle-field with polarized leaders and supporters of Raila Odinga and William Ruto engaging in direct physical confrontations.

The ceremony was progressing peacefully until Arati took the podium. In a speech that sparked fierce responses from the DP’s supporters, the Dagoretti MP accused Dr. William Ruto of causing the death of hundreds of Kisiis in Ruto Valley. The accusation is grounded on the historical tribal clash that occurred following the disputed 2007/8 elections. In the talk, Arati consistently informed the mourners that William Ruto owes the Kisii community an apology for playing a role in the death of their tribal men, women, and children in Rift Valley.

While the DP remained calm, his supporters did not take the attack kindly. Sylvanus Osoro who was seated next to Dr. William Ruto could not endure the pain anymore. After a few verbal blows from Arati, Osoro emerged in rage, attacking his opponent, who was still speaking. While the event was sad news, at least in as far as national unity is concerned, Kenyans did not lack something interesting out of it. To some Kenyans, it was a rare boxing scene that could not pass unnoticed. The blogger, Robert Alai of had this GIF to share on his Twitter page.
